example a dish-washing solution. After cleaning wipe
the surfaces dry.
The chrome mouldings of the air openings can be
detached by pulling them off from their holders. After
that the air passages can be cleaned using, for example
a vacuum cleaner.
The air deflectors located on top of and under the bay
section of models TS-56 and -57 are detachable (the
deflectors are detached/attached by pulling out/pushing
in the deflectors horizontally). This allows cleaning of
also the inner parts of the air circulation elements using,
for example a vacuum cleaner.

The paintwork of the surface of the insert can, if
necessary, restored by spraying it with heat proof paint
(mat finish). When doing this, it is absolutely essential
to follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions and to
ensure that the fireplace is cold. The paint must
withstand temperatures of at least 500

6. ASH JA SOOT REMOVAL
Front sealed installation. (Fig. 1)
♦ In Kastor fireplace inserts combustion is extremly

efficient minimizing the need of soot removal,
provided that the insert has been used correctly. If
the insert has been installed using the front-sealed
method, the insert must be removed from the
furnace before soot removal (protect the
surroundins, for example with plastic sheet). After
soot removal soot should be removed from the
installation space of the insert, as well as possible
ash from the top of the insert. After that slide the
insert into place, ensuring proper sealing according
to section 3.3. Depending on the fuel used and the
operation of the insert some ash may waft about
with the flue gases. Some of the ash may remain
inside the installation space of the insert. If the
insert is in continuous use, it is advisable to remove
the insert from the fireplace at least once during the
heating season and to clean the furnace and the
insert as described in connection with soot removal.
If the insert used only temporarily (e.g. weekend
and holiday homes), cleaning is effected, for
example at the end of the heating season.

♦ In the open installation (fig. 6) soot falls through the

INOX pipe into the device, from where it should be
removed in the same way as ash. Before that the
guidance plate must be removed from the insert
(section 6.1) (fig. 3). To remove the guidance plate
you must first remove the side bricks from the
furnace. After fitting the guidance plate and the side
bricks the insert is again ready for use.

Let the insert and the ashes cool down before
removing the ash
. Best ash container is a metallic pail
with a lid or similar. In this way you avoid the risk of
fire caused by hot ash.
Before starting the ash removal switch off all air

conditioners, range hoods etc., which can
generate underpressure.

Open the smoke damper to prevent spreading of

ash in the rooms.

Protect the surroundings as described above.

• Ash can be removed from the furnace via the grate

by pushing back and forth the grate regulating

lever. The ash box should be emptied after each
utilisation.

If necessary, the protective rail in the furnace can be
removed to make it possible to remove the ash also
through the opening of the ash box. Do not forget to put
the protective rail back into its holders inside the
furnace.

TS-12. --56. -57. -21: Ash can be removed through
the door using the enclosed ash shovel.

6.1 REMOVING THE GUIDANCE PLATE
• Open the door.

• Remove the protective rail on the front of the

furnace.

• Remove the side bricks.

• Lift the back edge of the guidance plate from its

holders.

• Pull the plate backwards to release it from its upper

holders at the same time lowering the back edge.

• Turn the plate so that it can be removed through the

door.

• Put the plate back in reserve order. Note the

position of the plate! the folds must be the right
side up. Fig. 3

7. MAINTENANCE OF THE FIRE-GRATE
Do not let ash pile up in the furnace - the grate can be
damaged. Remove the ash after each utilisation. The
grates can be removed by lifting vertically upwards. Put
the grates back in the same order, ensuring that the
grate pin is inserted into the hole in the regulating lever.
Models TS-12, -21, -56, -57 have no grate in the
insert.
