4. Masonry work
There are many solutions for doing the masonry of the
fireplace insert, bearing in mind that the above
requirements for the installation of the fireplace insert
must be met, whatever solution you decide to use.

5. OPERATION
5.1. General
Remove the stickers from the glasses.
Before starting the utilisation you must check that the
guidance plate, which can be detached for soot
removal, is in place and in the right position. It must be
fitted in the insert as indicated by the arrow, see section
6.1 (fig. 3).
During the first utilisations, some smoking may occur,
altough the fireplace inserts have been subjected to a
thermal pretreatment to guarantee their thermal
properties already at the factory. So, during the first
utilisations do not load too much firewood or other
combustion material in the insert and ensure proper
room ventilation
. We recommend to use at most two
billets of firewood during the first times of utilisation (do
not use too much small sticks, chips or paper - their
momentary power is high.)
The firewood must be placed vertically, not horizontally.
When the insert is used the first couple of times, use
only a small amount of firewood, because the power of
the insert may be surprisinly high. At he same time,
watch for the condition of the masonry for possible
cracking of the wall. These checks should be made
regularly, for example in case the insert has not been
used for a long time and/or it has been exposed to cold
(e.g. in the case of a weekend cottage or holiday
home). In the case of installation described in section
3.5, it must be ensured that the pipe and its attachment
is in good condition.
In addition, make sure that the precautions described in
section 1 has been adhered to.
The fireplace inserts are designed to work at their
nominal power
(approx. 8 kW); the output from 1 kg
mixed firewood is about 3 to 4 kW, depending how
moist the wood is. If the paint peels off or turns gray,
deformations or ruptures are found in the metallic parts,
the insert has been used contrary to the instructions.
Such damages are not covered by the guarantee.

5.2. ”Cold handle”
The delivery contains a so called ”cold handle”, by
means of which the grate can be adjusted and the door
opened also when these parts are hot. The hooked end
of the handle can be used for adjusting the grate.

5.3. O.BS. COMBUSTION SYSTEM
O.B.S. is a sophisticated combustion system developed
by Kastor Oy. It has major environmental benefits, such
as minimal emissions of hazardous substances and low
wood consumption. In general, the system works as
follows:
♦ The primary air (combustion air lead directly to the

wood material) is taken in via an adjustable fire-
grate (fig. 4), which when pulled out increases
combustion and when pushed in decreases
combustion.

♦ When wood burns, it becomes gaseous, and the

secondary air needed for burning the gases are

taken in via the edges of the door or through
separate air channels.

♦ Inserts, which do not have a fire-grate, are

equipped with a separate regulating lever below the
door in front of the insert. For maximum combustion
the lever must be turned to the right.

5.4. FUELS
In Kastor fireplace inserts only normal, untreated
firewood can be used as fuel
.

The following materials must not be used:
♦ Impregnated

wood

♦ Chipboard

♦ Clapboard

♦ Plastic

♦ Plastic-coated cardboard or paper

Liquid fuel must not be used, even for starting the
fire!
Oven-dried wood may cause damage to the device!

Use chips or thin sticks of wood only for starting the fire,
and even then only small amounts. Construction waste
must not be used, because it often contains hazardous
substances.
Do not store fuel near the insert, except what is
needed for one loading
. If you store wood elsewhere
in the vicinity of the insert, observe the safety distances
stated in section 2.3.

5.5. STARTING THE FIRE AND THE AMOUNT OF
FIREWOOD
When starting the fire, the smoke damper must be fully
open. The adjustable fire-grate in the insert (not
available for models TS-12 and -21), which acts as an
air flow regulator, must be open (lever 1 fully pulled out,
fig. 4!). Note! the air flow to the grate do not pass
through the ash box, so the box may be kept in
closed position. If there is not enough draught, the
air flow can be increased by opening the ash box
.
When starting the fire, put some sticks of firewood
crosswise in the furnace. The kindlings should be
placed in the middle between the bottom sticks (fig. 5).
Usually four sticks of firewood is sufficient to start the
fire, then add one or two at a time. When the fire has
started, put the additional sticks horizontally alongside
the back wall of the fireplace, 1 to 2 pieces at a time.
The kindling sticks must be placed behind the safety
railing and always in horizontal, not in vertical position.
The amount of wood shown in fig. 4 delivers as much
as about 7000 W with the door closed. The amount of
wood needed also depends on the size and the nominal
power of the furnace.
Do not load too much firewood into the furnace at
one time
.
Make also sure that burning wood cannot drop in
front of the protective rail
.
